This system provides the full power of the retail standard 2D Barcode using our fully GS1 compliant IBN Resolver technology. No commitment. One account per customer.
The clock is ticking: Sunrise 2027.
In less than two years, retailers worldwide are expected to fully support 2D Barcode scanning on product packaging, replacing the traditional barcode image. Your EAN or UPC number will be encoded into a 2D barcode. This is the biggest change in retail barcoding since the introduction of the traditional barcode. Get ready today!
Straight Talk on 2D Barcodes
Everything you need to know about the shift from stripes to squares.
You might hear this technology called by many names: 2D Barcodes, Product QR Codes, or GS1 Digital Link. These terms are often used interchangeably.
While it looks like a regular QR code, it is backed by a GS1 Resolver. This invisible engine allows the code to be scanned at the register for the price, or on a phone for the product info. Our system handles all that complex resolver tech for you.
You have some breathing room, but the clock is ticking. The global retail industry has set a target called Sunrise 2027. By that date, all retailer Point-of-Sale (POS) systems should be able to scan 2D barcodes.
Since packaging redesigns take time, we recommend adding a 2D barcode alongside your traditional barcode now. This future-proofs your product so you don’t have to panic in 2027.
No. If you already have an EAN-13 number, you keep it. That number is simply encoded inside the new 2D square image.
Think of it like getting a new ID card: the photo looks different, but your ID number stays the same. If you don’t have a barcode number yet, you will need to buy barcodes from us first.
Not yet. While modern scanners can read the new 2D codes, many smaller shops and older systems still rely on the traditional EAN stripes.
For now, the safest bet is “Dual Marking”—printing both the EAN image and the 2D barcode on your package. Eventually, once the transition is complete globally, you will be able to use just the 2D code.
They look similar, but they act very differently. A standard QR code usually just opens a website link.
A 2D Barcode is smarter. It follows strict retail standards (GS1 Digital Link) to encode your product’s GTIN (EAN number), batch numbers, and expiry dates plus a web link. This allows it to go “beep” at the checkout register, whereas a normal QR code cannot be scanned for purchase.
Yes! You can register on our free Customer Portal to generate basic 2D barcodes using GTINs purchased from us.
However, for the full “smart packaging” experience—including premium product data management and editable links—we recommend our IBN Link subscription (currently free for the first year).

Customised QR codes
Standard QR codes, although easily recognisable, can be an ugly part of product labelling or your design. We can make your QR code with colour and logos to better match your brand image.
If you have a good designer, they can modify the QR codes for you. However, this is often expensive, and sometimes they can inadvertently damage the actual QR code so that it won’t scan.
We have dedicated designers that can provide custom QR code designs for you.
This product includes;
- a static or dynamic QR code (see below for the difference between static and dynamic)
- QR code images in 3 formats (png, svg and pdf)
In the comments box on the checkout page, tell us about your company’s brand and how you will be using the QR code. Let us know the colours you want. Please email us your logo as a png or jpeg file. Then our designers can create a custom QR code for you.
Any extra design time is charged at ₹1000 per hour.
This example shows the same QR code in original and customised versions.
There are limits to the changes we can make to a QR code, as the overriding aim is to maintain its ability to be scanned. We can introduce two colours (with gradients), add a custom logo to the centre and alter the QR code’s foreground elements.
For all customization options, see here.
Call to Action
We can add a call to action such as ‘Buy Now’ or “Subscribe’.
Static or Dynamic
Please watch our short video explaining the difference between static and dynamic QR codes.
STATIC QR Codes
Static QR codes encode your URL directly in the QR code. They are permanent and will work as long as your website URL doesn’t change. Statics can’t be changed, as the URL is encoded directly in the QR Code. They have unlimited scans. Static QR codes can also be used for things other than URLs, e.g., encoding text, v business cards, sending emails, or SMS messages.DYNAMIC QR Codes
These use our Dynamic QR Code service, which enables the target URL to be changed repeatedly in the future if required.Unlimited scans: Scans of the Dynamic QR Code are UNLIMITED so long as you don’t abuse the QR code with millions of scans that cause technical problems such as crashed servers.
Functions for life: Functions for two years and will continue to function after that for as long as you pay a small 2-yearly hosting fee of $20.
FREE unlimited redirection of the target URL: You can do it as often as you want via our customer portal.
Unlimited tracking: You can order TRACKING REPORTS which function for lifetime of the dynamic QR code.

Boost your product’s online visibility with Global Barcode Registration.
Barcode registration links your physical product to its digital footprint. When consumers scan your barcode with a smartphone app, or when buyers search for your number online, registration ensures your product details and company information may appear instantly.
Important: Read before purchasing.
1. Registration is FREE with our barcode packages: If you are buying an EAN or UPC barcode package directly from us, registration is already included. You do not need to buy this item.
2. This is for third-party or publishing numbers: This service is designed for customers who purchased their barcodes from a different company, or for authors and publishers wanting to register their ISBN or ISSN numbers.
3. This does not include a barcode number: This service only registers numbers you already legally own.
Why should I register my barcode?
Registration is completely optional. Your barcodes will scan perfectly at retail checkouts without it. However, registering your product on the major internet databases provides distinct advantages for a growing brand:
-
Smartphone App Integration: When a customer scans your barcode using a scanning app, they may see your product photo, description, and where to buy it, rather than a blank screen. This depends on which app you use.
-
Global Search Presence: Your product joins millions of others on the International Barcodes Database, improving your general online profile and SEO.
-
Theft Deterrence: If another company attempts to illegally use your barcode numbers, your prior registration serves as public proof of ownership.
