How the GTIN Check Digit Works

The last digit of a GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) is a calculated check digit. It is used to ensure that the barcode has been scanned or typed correctly. If the check digit does not match the result of the mathematical algorithm, the scanner will reject the barcode.

The Modulo-10 Algorithm

The calculation involves multiplying each digit by a weight (alternating 3 and 1), summing the products, and finding the value needed to reach the next multiple of 10.
